# La diabetes y la apnea del sueño

La prevalencia de la apnea del sueño es muy elevada (hasta un 58 %) entre las personas con diabetes.1 De modo similar, existe una elevada prevalencia de intolerancia a la glucosa y diabetes entre las personas con apnea del sueño (en un estudio, el 50 % de los pacientes del sexo masculino con apnea del sueño tenían intolerancia a la glucosa y un 30 % de ellos tenía diabetes).2

La obesidad es un factor contribuyente común tanto de la apnea del sueño como de la diabetes. No obstante, pese a la importancia de la obesidad en ambas enfermedades, los estudios han demostrado que la apnea del sueño es un factor contribuyente adicional que se encuentra independientemente asociado a la intolerancia a la glucosa y la resistencia a la insulina, más allá de la obesidad.3,4 La resistencia a la insulina es un precursor de la diabetes.

La CPAP puede mejorar la sensibilidad a la insulina y el control de la glucemia en pacientes con apnea del sueño, sobre todo en pacientes no obesos.5,6
